Officer Rich visit

Officer Rich brought his car into the schoolyard and allowed
students to have a look inside.  This was a HUGE hit! 

Officer Rich visited with students in Grades 4, 7 and 8 today.  He spoke to the Grade 4 and 7 students about Internet Safety, and had a great discussion with the Grade 8 classes about Bullying and Cyber Bullying. Students asked many questions and enjoyed the real-life examples and stories Officer Rich shared.  The main message given to students was to be in control of their own actions and to be a leader, not a follower. With regards to the internet, Officer Rich reminded students to never share passwords or post any personal information or content they would not be willing to show their parents.  A big thank you to Officer Rich!  He will be back in the next few months to speak with Grades 1, 2, 5 and 6.

It has come to our attention that some of our Gr 6 – 8 students have been using a website called ask.fm.  Ask.fm is a social networking website that is extremely popular in Europe, with about 65 million users, mostly children and young teens.  This site allows anyone to post anonymous comments and ask questions.  Ask.fm is increasingly being used as a means to communicate and post inappropriate content.   We have spoken to the students about internet safety and have reviewed our on-line code of conduct.  We have also involved our Community Policing Officer, Officer Rich, who will be speaking to the classes about Internet Safety.  Please continue to work with us to keep the students safe by monitoring their Internet activity.  If you have concerns or would like to discuss this further, please contact the office.

Special Education Information Sessions for TDSB Parents/Guardians

Information Sessions for Parents/Guardians of TDSB Students

The TDSB Special Education department will be hosting information sessions for parents/guardians of TDSB students regarding Individual Education Plan (IEP) and the Identification and Review Committee (IPRC) on the evening of Tuesday, November 19, 2013 from 7:00 to 9:00 PM.  There will be one session in the East: 140 Borough Drive, Council Chambers - Main Floor and in the West: 1 Civic Centre Court, In-Service Rooms - 1st Floor.

The Seeds of Hope club at LKS is supporting the Free the Children We Scare Hunger campaign. Students are being encouraged to bring in non-perishable food items for the the Daily Bread Food Bank.  The goal is to collect at least 300 lbs of food.

A very big thank you to all the children involved and to the teacher organizers: Ms. Sunde, Ms. Tyndall, Ms. Young and Ms. Zappi.  Thank you for your support and for helping others in need.

Halloween Safety Tips

A message from “Officer Rich”.

Remember why we have rules, they are to keep us safe! And when you do not follow the rules, you are no longer safe!  Please follow these important Halloween Rules when you are “trick or treating”.

1)      NEVER go into anyone’s house or car, no matter how well you know that person.  Unless  your parent or trusted adult is with you.
2)      NEVER eat any candy until your parents have checked it.
3)      Costumes should be short enough so that you don’t trip and fall.
4)      Watch out for cars REMEMBER that it may be hard for drivers to see you.
5)      Trick or treat in your own neighbourhood and NEVER take shortcuts through backyards, alleys, laneways or parks.
6)      Stay away from lit pumpkins.
7)      Trick or treat in a group, NEVER go alone.
8)      ALWAYS trick or treat with a parent or trusted adult.
9)      Use face paint or makeup instead of a mask.  Masks make it hard to see where you are walking.
10)   When you are trick or treating, never “zig zag” across the street.  Walk up one side of the street, then walk down the other side of the street.
11)   Always walk on the sidewalk, NOT the street.
12)   Only visit houses with the lights on.
13)   Always be polite and say thank you.

CHANGE FOR KIDS - HOLLAND BLOORVIEW REHABILITATION HOSPITAL

LKS continues to support the Change For Kids Campaign at Holland Bloorview Kids Rehabilitation Hospital.  Thanks to a donation from Scotiabank Canada, each LKS student will bring home an orange Halloween bag with a Change for Kids coin card inside.  There is no cost to parents.  Please hand out the coins to trick-or-treaters on Halloween and encourage them to enter the PIN code online for a chance to win great prizes.   A donation is made to Holland Bloorview for each coin entered.  For further information http://www.changeforkids.ca/.
