Peer Helpers @ LKS

Last week, LKS launched a new Peer Mediation Program.  Grade 6 students, who were selected by their teachers for their leadership skills, were trained in conflict resolution and peer mediation.  The peer helpers will be available during morning and afternoon recess to help resolve conflict amongst younger students and their peers.

Crossing Guard Update

Bob, our crossing guard, is scheduled to be back on November 17.  He is doing well and slowly recovering.  Until his return, we hope to continue having a replacement, as we have had this week.

Parent Council Meeting - October

At yesterday's parent council meeting a group of parents from our Health Education Committee played an audio clip about Sabrina's Law and discussed Anaphylaxis.  This was a very powerful message about not only Peanut and Tree Nut allergies, but all other life-threatening allergies.

Here is a link to the LKS website Anaphylaxis page.  Anaphylaxis

Also, the new TDSB reporting procedures were discussed.  Here is a link for more information on reporting and the new Ministry of Education Growing Success Document.

Toronto Police Services - News Release

Parents and Community members,

Toronto Police Services often brings to the attention of local Elementary schools News Releases affecting the surrounding area.  This is customary and not intended to create panic.  As such, we have been notified of an alleged sexual assault that occurred in a residential apartment building in the Dundas Street West/Royal York Road area.

LKS teachers and staff regularly speak with our students about safety, and will discretely review safety tips once again in an age-appropriate manner.  In addition, I have attached three files below regarding streetprofing tips, child safety and personal safety.

Thank You!

Thank you to all the parents in the LKS parent community for supporting the TDSB Hockey Academy that I am involved with.  Your donations of equipment will allow more students to participate.

Thank you again!

Waste Reduction Week

Just a reminder that Waste Reduction Week is October 18 - 24.  As a Gold EcoSchool, we will continue to work hard to promote our litter less lunches and reduce waste.  Your support is appreciated.

Hockey Equipment Donations Needed

Hello everyone,

I am reaching out to the LKS community for some help with a program I am involved with called  "The Hockey Academy".  Wee need equipment of all kinds (bags, skates, helmets, shin guards, etc..).  This program in the SW1 area of the TDSB provides 60 Grade 5 students, that otherwise would not have the opportunity to play hockey, with full equipment and 8 weeks of hockey instruction at the Mastercard Centre starting mid-October, at no cost.

If anyone has any hockey equipment that needs a new home, please contact me at the school.

Thank you!

Thank you!

A big THANK YOU to the Owen family for the plants and labour!  The garden by the parking lot looks GREAT!  The Environmental Committee at LKS is also looking forward to the bulb planting by the Kindergarten students by their classrooms.

Another wonderful week at LKS!

Many great things have once again started happening at LKS including all the sports teams and clubs, and the beautification of our schoolyard with some gardening.  A big THANK YOU to Mrs. Cooper, Mr. Redding, Mr. Blais and the Grade 8 volunteers!

As many of you have already seen, roof repairs have begun.  This will continue over the next few weekends.

Two new notices have been posted on the school website regarding curriculum night and volunteering.  Here is the link.  http://www.tdsb.on.ca/SchoolWeb/_site/ViewItem.asp?siteid=10009&menuid=23787&pageid=20612

May Update

May has been a great month.

Staff, parents and students have been working hard to revise the LKS Mission, Code of Behaviour and Student expectations. Updates have been posted on the school website.

http://www.tdsb.on.ca/SchoolWeb/_site/viewitem.asp?siteid=10009&pageid=6587&menuid=7571

In addition, the LKS Day Schedule and Year Calendar have been finalized and posted on the website as well.

As a reminder, with the increasing temperatures, please ensure students dress appropriately for the weather, wear a hat and sunscreen when outside, and drink plenty of water. In June, I am hoping Public Health will be able to come to LKS to do a special presentation on Sun Health. Public Health will also be at LKS in June for Dental Screening.

My first Springfest was great! I quite enjoyed the day, even the VERY COLD water balloons. All the participants seemed to have a great time. A BIG thank you to all the parents, organizers and sponsors of the event.

It was also great to meet the many volunteers at LKS at our Volunteer Tea. Again, thank you for all that you do to make LKS a better place.

Have a great June!

April 2010

The past 2 months have been great and very busy! I am very fortunate to be working in a great school, with super staff, and a very supportive community.

Feel free to check my blog monthly for updates and current information. I will update more often, if needed, but post my monthly update the last week of the month.

LKS is enjoying Earth Week. Ms. Perry and the Eco Schools Committee have planned a great week! Please visit my Eco Blog link for more details. I am also looking forward to accompanying the Senior Eco Warriors to the Green Living Show this Friday.

We have been very lucky to have 4 Teacher Candidates from OISE and Lakehead University. They have been well received by the staff and students.

The school IT committee is working hard to develop a plan for implementing Technology throughout the school. Currently, several teachers are using SMART boards; a wonderful interactive teaching tool.

From a safety standpoint, I have begun working collaboratively with teachers, parents and students to revise the school Behaviour Code. The revised Behaviour Code will align with Ministry and TDSB policy, and once updated, will be on display in the main entrance and included in the student planners for next year.

I am also in the process of working with the TDSB Safe and Caring Schools Safety Infrastructure Committee to look at updating our security system.
