Social Media - Robotics - Earth Hour - Purple Day
I hope everyone had a wonderful break. Students were very excited to share their march break stories and get back to all the wonderful things happening at LKS.
On Wednesday, Chris Vollum was at LKS presenting to the Grade 6 - 8 students about Social Media and how to use it effectively. His presentation called Facebook 101, sent a clear message that the use of Social Media must be done with integrity and respect. He advocates that students use Social Media wisely and effectively to create great content and add value or change lives. He provided many examples of appropriate and inappropriate uses and discussed how universities and employers are now using Social Media networks as a reference check. Students were advised to be careful of what they post or follow. His simplest message to the students was to ask themselves this question: Am I comfortable seeing my post on google 3 years from now, on the front page of a paper, or am I comfortable sharing it with parents and grandparents? If not, DELETE and don't post! The last component of his presentation focused on changing security settings to block searches from the internet. A big thank you to parent council for supporting this event.
To raise awareness about climate change, the Toronto District School Board once again held its own special Earth Hour in advance of the annual global Earth Hour. Today at LKS, we supported this ECO initiative by holding our Earth Hour from 2 - 3 pm. Classes were asked to turn down the lights and be as electricity-free as possible. Way to go LKS!

Yesterday, our very own Mr. Harrison and Mr. Littlejohn starting a Robotics Club at LKS. The students met and began building immediately. Their accomplishments in a very short time were spectacular! Thank you to Mr. Harrison and Mr. Littlejohn for providing such a great opportunity for the students.

LKS will once again be encouraging everyone to wear purple on March 26th for epilepsy awareness.
The "Purple Day Act" was recently passed by parliament encouraging everyone to wear the colour purple on March 26th to indicate their support for people with epilepsy and to increase public awareness of this disorder. Thank you to Claire in Ms. Walker's class for preparing the morning announcements in support of this event. For more information, please visit http://www.purpleday.org/

Black History Month
February was Black History month. At LKS, students were engaged in a multitude of activities and discussions. In addition, students in Ms. Walker's and Mr. Harrison's class shared a Black History fact every morning during the announcements. Thank you to both of them! Also, a big thank you to Ms. Walker and her class for their efforts in preparing such a detailed, informative and educational timeline display for Black History month.
Susan Hughes: Author Visit
Author Susan Hughes visited LKS this week and spoke with classes about non-fiction story writing and the unique schools she has visited around the world. Students enjoyed the opportunity to learn from her experiences and will hopefully implement the writing strategies and suggestions discussed.
