Breaking News: Bus strike averted

Local media outlets have just reported that a tentative deal was reached and the bus strike has been averted.  Transportation will continue as normal.

The Toronto District School Board has been advised by Stock Transportation that two unionized school bus divisions have provided notice of possible strike action beginning as early as Wednesday, May 1, 2013. Read the Media Release for more information.

Mayor Ford visits LKS

Mayor Ford graciously accepted an invitation from Stefanie Ford (no relation) in Ms. Walker's class and visited Lambton-Kingsway JMS on Thursday.    Stefanie met Mayor Ford in a restaurant and shared with him that she not only had the same name as his daughter, but also completed a class project on him.  They instantly bonded and began arranging a visit.

On Thursday, Mayor Ford spent about 45 minutes with the Grade 5 classes and discussed the different levels of Government and fielded some great questions from the students.  When asked what his most frustrating part of politics was, Mayor Ford replied "people not having an answering machine."  He went on to explain that he returns every call he receives and gets frustrated when he spends months trying to return calls because he is not able to leave a message.  Mayor Ford also fielded questions on some hot topics including the Casino debate and Transit in Toronto.  Mayor Ford ended his discussion with the students by encouraging them to become actively involved in politics by volunteering and by voting when they are able to.

A very big thank you to Mayor Ford for taking the time out of his busy schedule to visit LKS.  Also, thank you to Ms. Walker and Stefanie for organizing, and to the Grade 5 staff and students for being such welcoming hosts.

Springfest Tombola Committee Message

Message from the Tombola Committee:



The Tombola Leaf Campaign is one of LKS's most popular events. Last year, this campaign raised $8,000 in donations to the school! Students are encouraged to bring in cash or cheque donations that will be pooled each day for each classroom. Each class will receive a Tombola "Leaf" for every $5.00 raised. The leaves are proudly displayed on classroom doors. The classes with the most Tombola Leaves will WIN prizes. (The Tombola Committee will assess each class's success on a pro rata basis so that classes with fewer students are not disadvantaged from being eligible to win.)


This Campaign continues next week: Apr 29-May 3. Buy 1, 5 or 10 leaves! Simply send your cash or cheque (payable to "LKS & Parent Council") in an envelope marked "Tombola Leaves" with your child to their classroom. Thank you for your support!!!

International Day of Pink

LKS and the TDSB will be participating in the International Day of Pink on April 10, 2013.
Day of Pink is a day of action, created when a youth in a high school in Cambridge, Nova Scotia was bullied because he wore a pink shirt to school. His fellow peers decided to stand up to this bullying, and hundreds of students came to school wearing pink to show support.  We invite everyone to make a difference and participate by wearing PINK on April 10.

Babysitting Certification Course run by the Red Cross Saturday April 6

Trustee Gough is sponsoring a Babysitting Certification Course on Saturday April 6 from 8:30 am to 5:30 pm at Bloorlea Middle School (4050 Bloor Street West). Youth 10 years and up who want to become a babysitter or may already be one are invited to register for this certification course offered by the Red Cross. The course covers the responsibilities of a babysitter, safety tips, basic child care skills and how to run your babysitting business. Ward Forum on Learning Exceptionalities 101 - Gifted, Learning Disabled or Both? - Tuesday April 23
The next Ward Forum will focus on Learning Exceptionalities 101 - Gifted, Learning Disabled or Both? It will be held on Tuesday April 23 at 7 pm in the Library of Seventh Street JS (101 Seventh Street – south of Lake Shore Blvd. W. and Islington Ave. Enter from Sixth Street just east of Islington Ave.)

TDSB special education experts will help parents to understand the process of identifying, assessing and teaching exceptional learners, especially those in Grades 1-5. We will be discussing how children who learn in different ways can be supported in their learning, at school and at home.
